5-year-old girl knocks on window for help after woman leaves her in hot car at Walmart, police say

PEMBROKE PINES, Florida. – A woman was arrested Monday after she left a 5-year-old girl alone in a hot car while shopping at Walmart in Pembroke Pines, according to police.

Pembroke Pines police said they responded to a child neglect call at the Walmart at 12800 Pines Blvd. shortly before 2:30 p.m.

According to authorities, 62-year-old Martine Louis-Jacques left the child unattended in a gray 2012 Mercedes when she entered the store.

Her arrest report states that the car engine was turned off and all the windows were rolled up, preventing the girl from getting any air circulation.

Walmart employees told police that the girl was “wildly” knocking on the car window to get their attention and appeared frightened and disturbed.

According to police, Louis-Jacques had already been in the store for about twenty minutes when Walmart employees intervened.

Employees unlocked the vehicle and brought the child inside, where he was eventually reunited with his mother, the report said.

Louis-Jacques left the store with the girl before the police arrived at around 2:51 p.m.

Authorities said surveillance video from Walmart captured the entire incident, including Louis-Jacques parking the car and entering the store without the girl.

Prison records show that Louis-Jacques is charged with child neglect without serious bodily harm.

Police have not disclosed the relationship between Louis-Jacques and the victim.

Since Tuesday, she has been held in the Broward Main Jail on $3,500 bail.
