UK riot news: 15-year-old boy faces trial for disturbing the peace, along with Southport ‘ringleader’ who threw bricks at police

Bodycam footage shows thugs throwing objects at police during the riots

Among those sentenced today is a 15-year-old boy who admitted violent riots in Sunderland and a theft from an e-cigarette shop.

He joins forces with the “leader” of the Southport riots and one of the thugs who attacked a black man in Manchester and who also faces prison.

Tom Neblett, 20, from Southport, is said to have played a leading role in the violence that broke out in the Merseyside town on July 30.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Joseph Ley from Stockport was part of a large group of white men who attacked a black man on the ground in Manchester city centre on August 3.

The 30-year-old was convicted of violent disorder at Manchester Crown Court along with two other rioters.

Earlier on Wednesday, a woman was sentenced to 15 months in prison after admitting posting a threatening Facebook comment in response to a photo of people cleaning up after the riots in Southport.

Julie Sweeney, 53, wrote on August 3: “This is absolutely ridiculous. Don’t protect the mosques. Blow up the mosques with the adults inside.”

On Thursday, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) announced that 1,127 people had been arrested and 648 charged following days of violence across England and Northern Ireland.

Rioter who attacked shop window with a “spinning kick” has to go to prison

A man who performed a spinning kick against a shop window during riots in Manchester has been sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Oliver Chapman, 23, of Duke Street, Radcliffe, was sentenced for violent disorder at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday afternoon.

Prosecutor Philip Hall said Chapman was “part of a group seen kicking shop windows in Manchester city centre on August 3”.

During a police interview, Chapman admitted to kicking a shop front and said: “I gave her a silly spinning kick.”

Judge John Potter told Chapman that he had taken part in an “incident of lawlessness” and had “brutally kicked a glass door”.

The judge added: “You chose to join a large group of people who were intent on committing violence.”

Father admits grabbing police officer’s arm when his partner was arrested

A father has pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer in Nottingham as his partner was being arrested during a demonstration.

Kevin Musgrave, 37, admitted grabbing the police officer’s arm during the August 3 incident when his partner Victoria Gray was being arrested. She was given a six-month suspended prison sentence at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on August 7 for shoving a police officer and spitting at another during a demonstration.

During a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court, Musgrave also admitted spitting in a police vehicle.

The self-employed roofer was charged with assault by beating a paramedic and criminal damage valued at less than £5,000.

District Judge Sunil Khanna sentenced Musgrave, of High Lane East, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, to a 12-week suspended prison sentence and 100 hours’ unpaid community service.

Judge Khanna said: “If you had been part of the main group, I would have sent you to jail immediately.”

Several more people charged after riots in Britain

According to prosecutors, several other people have been charged in connection with the violent unrest seen across the country following the Southport stabbings.

Paul Dixon, 35, has been charged with using threatening words or behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke violence and possession of a controlled Class B drug. He will appear at Nottingham Magistrates Court.

Tyler Pottinger, aged 24, has been charged with racially/religiously motivated harassment/alarm/harassment by words/writing and using threatening words or behaviour and will appear at Leicester Magistrates Court.

Mitchell Hanley, 36, has been charged with violent disorder and assault by beating a paramedic and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Man who threw bricks at hotel with asylum seekers jailed

A man who threw bricks at police officers outside a hotel housing asylum seekers has been sentenced to two years and ten months in prison.

Paul Smith, 21, of Keynsham Road, Manchester, was sentenced for violent disorder at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday morning.

Footage shown in court shows Smith throwing bricks and a bottle at police officers and vehicles during unrest outside the Holiday Inn hotel in Manchester on July 31.

Prosecutor Philip Hall said of Smith’s behaviour in the footage: “He is smiling and appears to be enjoying the event.”

In his verdict, Judge John Potter said: “On 29 July, an appalling and tragic attack took place in Southport. Three children lost their lives and numerous other children and adults were seriously injured in a knife attack.”

“Shortly after the attack, deliberate lies were spread on leaflets, on the Internet and on social media about who might be responsible for the attack.

“This material highlighted the alleged nationality, ethnicity and religion of the alleged attacker.

“Out of ignorance about racism, mobs gathered in towns and cities across the country, seeking revenge.”

Swinney and unions condemn “inexcusable” unrest in joint statement

As of Wednesday, 372 adults and at least 65 people under the age of 18 have been charged in connection with the unrest following the murder of three young girls in Southport, Merseyside.

According to prosecutors, 69 adults were convicted and 64 were sent to prison.

Despite rumors of planned protests, the unrest has not spread north of the border.

Two women confess to violent riots after unrest in Bristol

Two women have admitted violent acts in connection with the riots in Bristol on August 3.

Elly-Jayne Cox, 33, of Bishopsworth, Bristol, and Lisa Bishop, 38, of Lawrence Weston, Bristol, appeared before Bristol Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to violent disorder and were remanded in custody by District Judge Joanna Dickens.

They will appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday for sentencing.

Hartlepool woman charged with violent riots

Cleveland Police said a 40-year-old woman had been charged with violent disorder in connection with the riots in Hartlepool on July 31.

Donna Conniff, of Alford Court, Hartlepool, was remanded in custody and is due to appear before Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Merseyside Police release more images of people wanted for riots

Merseyside Police have released a further eight images of suspects they would like to speak to following violent unrest in Liverpool and Southport.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Roberts said: “These eight men need to come forward as soon as possible as we believe they could assist our ongoing investigations into the disturbances in Southport and Liverpool.

“Every single person who took part must face the consequences of their actions. We are still working through the footage and images that are coming to us and will continue to arrest, charge and bring to justice all those identified.

“To date, we have arrested 74 people and charged 41. More will be added in the coming days and weeks.”

“Please contact us with the name and the corresponding number on the picture and we will do the rest.”
