Daniela Larreal Chirinos, Olympic cyclist, died as a result of a choking attack

Former Olympic cyclist Daniela Larreal Chirinos has died after choking on food in her Las Vegas apartment, Fox Sports and Spanish newspaper ABC reported. She was 50 years old.

Police found the Venezuelan athlete dead in her apartment on Friday, August 16, after she was reported missing by her coworkers at a Las Vegas hotel when she failed to show up for work on Monday, August 12, according to a Fox Sports report translated from Spanish.

Although the Clark County Coroner’s Office told Fox News, An official cause of death for Chirinosos has yet to be released, but Fox Sports reported that police “have concluded the cause of death was asphyxiation from solid food particles found in her windpipe.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County Coroner’s Office for comment on Chirinos’ death.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee posted a tribute to Chirinosos on X (formerly Twitter) on August 16.

“The COV Board regrets the departure of Daniela Larreal,” reads a translation of the statement. “With an outstanding career in track cycling, he managed to represent us with honour at five Olympic Games, collecting four Olympic diplomas and triumphs that have always filled us with great pride.”

She was a five-time Olympian, competing in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and London in 2012.

According to Fox News, she was one of her country’s most successful cyclists, with her best placing coming in the team sprint final in London, where she finished seventh. She also won gold medals at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships.
