These pro-Trump hardliners think his campaign is not right-wing enough

A recurring theme among “Never Trump” conservatives is that Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, like his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, represents a complete departure from old-school Republican principles – and that Trumpism is not traditional Reagan/Goldwater-style conservatism, but a dangerously authoritarian movement.

However, some of Trump’s far-right MAGA supporters, according to Julianne McShane of Mother Jones and Drew Harwell of the Washington Post, complain that his 2024 campaign is not far-right enough.

One of them is white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Another is radio host Candace Owens.

In an Aug. 9 post on X, formerly Twitter, Fuentes wrote: “Tonight I declared a new Groyper War on the Trump campaign. We support Trump, but his campaign has been hijacked by the same advisers, lobbyists and donors he defeated in 2016, and they are screwing it up. Without serious change, we are headed for catastrophic defeat.”

McShane points out that Fuentes has made “racist attacks” against Indian-American Usha Vance, who is married to Trump’s vice presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance (Republican, Ohio).

Fuentes also attacked Trump for his collaboration with Republican strategists Chris LaCivita and his senior adviser Susie Wiles, both of whom he considers too established.

In a similar vein, Owens complained on her podcast, “I’m just not sure who’s behind the MAGA movement anymore today. You’re losing the support of the people who believed in you… You need those people.”

However, McShane argues that “both far-right activists and leading Republicans could find some comfort in Trump’s list of extremist priorities if he is re-elected.”

“The former president, for example, has said he will conduct mass deportations and recently signaled that he is open to banning medication abortions — although his campaign later denied this,” McShane notes. “And this week, Trump’s campaign account on X sparked controversy after posting a photo of black men on a street with the caption ‘Your neighborhood under Kamala.'”

Liberal agitator and former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann posted in response to the August 13 tweet: “Racist, fucking nutcases.”

“Just as Republicans have not softened their stance on abortion – no matter what they would have you believe – Trump has not Really “He has not softened his stance at all,” McShane explains. “The problem for his supporters is that Americans – even those who advise him – seem less and less interested in his hard-line policy positions.”
