Grant Williams or Josh Green?

When the Charlotte Hornets traded Dallas’ Josh Green, everyone assumed he would be a starting guard and flank LaMelo Ball in the backcourt, but is he better off on the bench?

In a starting lineup and rotation prediction from HoopsHype, they have Charlotte with a starting lineup of LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, Grant Williams and Mark Williams. Vasilije Micic, Seth Curry, Josh Green, Cody Martin and Nick Richards would be the first five backups.

I don’t really like that, but I don’t see any benefit in having Grant Williams and Miles Bridges play together. They’re practically the same player in terms of stature and build, and that reduces the defensive value in the backcourt.

Instead, I believe Charles Lee will use Josh Green at the two, Miller at the three, and Bridges at the four. Although Bridges is undersized, he seems to fit better at the four than the three. This frees Brandon Miller from the responsibility of covering probably the opposing team’s best player from the one to the three, and can leave that task to Green.

The other part is: If you start Williams and Bridges together, who do you replace them when they have to go out of the game? Cody Martin? At the four? I don’t think so. If the Hornets do indeed use Bridges at the three, they would be smart to look for a bigger, longer body to fill the power forward spot long-term. Regardless of which route they go, Grant Williams is better suited for a bench position and there’s nothing wrong with that.
