Marlins reliever on track to accomplish something that hasn’t happened in the last decade of baseball history

The Miami Marlins lost 9-6 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Marlins are trying to reach the finish line of a terrible season that has seen them go 46-79 and finish last in the National League East.

The Marlins are undoubtedly not particularly well-positioned on offense and have traded Luis Arraez, Josh Bell and Jazz Chisholm Jr. this year, but due to the numerous injuries to their pitchers, they were doomed from the start.

Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez are out for the rest of the year due to Tommy John surgery, and Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera and Jesus Luzardo have also each spent extended periods on the injured list.

As bad as it may have been, there is an interesting piece of historical information to keep in mind as you approach the finish line.

According to @FoolishBaseball on social media:

Declan Cronin has not allowed a home run in 57.0 IP this year. If he continues like this, he could be the first pitcher to go 70+ innings and allow 0 home runs since Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera of the Royals in 2014.

Cronin threw 0.2 innings without a home run on Monday, giving him 57.2 innings this year. He has a 4.68 ERA, but keeping the ball in the yard is a valuable skill. The 26-year-old has also struck out 61 batters this season. He is 3-3.

Cronin is currently playing his second major league season with the Chicago White Sox and Marlins. He has a career record of 3-4 and a 5.37 ERA.

The Marlins will play against the Diamondbacks again on Tuesday.
