Baltimore Ravens will not sign another quarterback

Those who believe the Baltimore Ravens offense cannot cope with the loss of superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson had little to dispel their concerns in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Veteran Josh Johnson started, but the 38-year-old migrant worker failed to impress, completing just four of 12 passes for 62 yards. Sixth-round rookie Devin Leary took over for the second half, but he too struggled, completing six of 10 passes for 37 yards, although a sneak touchdown from the quarterback boosted his total. Finally, undrafted rookie Emory Jones took over for the final offensive snap of the game, but that ended in a strip sack that ultimately cost the Ravens the game.

After the lackluster performance from the backups, some wondered if the Ravens might bring in a new face to join their quarterback team. However, according to Ryan Mink, editorial director of Ravens.com, that doesn’t seem to be in the team’s plans.

“No, the Ravens will not bring in another backup quarterback,” Mink writes in a mailbag article. The man is Josh Johnson. Johnson had a rough season opener, completing 4 of 12 passes for 62 yards against the Eagles, but that’s one game in a 15-plus-year career that includes 39 regular season games and nine starts. I’m not going to overreact to a longtime veteran playing a preseason game, and neither are the Ravens coaches.”

As Mink later notes, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said earlier this week that the team “loves” Johnson and has confidence in him to lead the offense. Fans may not agree with that assessment, but it’s clear that the team believes in its current backup.

The player many Ravens fans mentioned is veteran Ryan Tannehill, who spent the last five years with the Tennessee Titans. However, he isn’t familiar to offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and unless he’s willing to sign for the veteran minimum, the Ravens likely don’t have enough cap space to bring him in. It would be nice to reunite him with star running back Derrick Henry, but that just doesn’t seem practical.

Maybe the Ravens will change their minds if Jackson is out long-term, but right now they don’t see much reason to restructure their quarterback team.
