17-year-old girl from Baldwinsville dies of injuries one week after accident

Baldwinsville, NY – A 17-year-old girl has died a week after being hit by a car in Baldwinsville.

Ka’Niya Cureton, a 12th-grader at Charles W. Baker High School, was walking on East Genesee Street on Aug. 11 when she was struck by a car, state police said.

The Baldwinsville Central School District announced that Cureton died Sunday morning.

“We are heartbroken by this devastating news and our thoughts and prayers are with Niya’s family,” Superintendent Joseph M. DeBarbieri said in an email to the district community.

On Aug. 11, troopers said Cureton ran into the roadway from the north shoulder of East Genesee Street and was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by 50-year-old Joella Fulwiley of Syracuse, according to state police spokeswoman Jennifer Jiron.

Cureton was admitted to Upstate University Hospital, where she remained in critical condition for a week.

No tickets were issued and no arrests were made. The accident is still under investigation, officials said.

The district’s crisis response team is available to students and staff, DeBarbieri said.
