Claus Winter Graugaard dies at the age of 51

Claus Winter Graugaard died suddenly on July 30th at the age of 51.

Graugaard has been widely recognized as a key leader both within the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and across the shipping industry. Since joining the Center’s leadership team in January 2021, he has played a key role as Chief Technology Officer – Onboard Vessel Solutions.

He was widely respected for his professionalism, dedication and tireless efforts in promoting the maritime industry’s transition to a sustainable future. He was also known for his warm and kind-hearted nature as a colleague, the centre said.

Graugaard was educated as a naval architect and marine engineer at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Strathclyde. He began a distinguished career in the shipping industry with significant appointments at DNV and J. Lauritzen A/S, where he managed strategic projects and global operations. Graugaard was actively involved in the Danish Shipowners Association and served on the board of Star Management Associates and AXIS Offshore.

His work has taken him all over the world to Norway, Australia, the Philippines, Croatia, Canada, Japan and Denmark, where he has built lasting cross-cultural relationships. Claus has immersed himself in strategy, business development and innovation while honing his extensive technical expertise.

During his time at the Centre, Claus led the Onboard Vessel Solutions team to impressive achievements. His leadership contributed significantly to advancing the feasibility of decarbonising shipping. His work included developing new vessel designs, solutions to convert the existing fleet and new operating methods with a high level of safety and efficiency.

In his private life, Graugaard was a loving husband, father and friend, as well as an avid sportsman.

“In our grief, we find comfort in knowing that Claus spent his final days doing what he loved most: traveling and cycling in a beautiful place with his wife and daughters. Our thoughts and support go out to Claus’ family, friends and professional network,” the center said in a statement.

“Claus embodied the Centre’s values: courage, diligence, collaboration and determination. He tackled the challenge of sustainable maritime decarbonisation with passion, enthusiasm, professionalism and energy. In Claus’ memory, we are determined to continue our work on the decarbonisation vision he so passionately shared with renewed determination.”
