Watts family desperately searches for answers after 16-year-old girl disappears

WATTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A Watts family is desperate for answers and is asking the public for help in locating a missing 16-year-old girl who was last seen a week ago.

Mayanin Vazquez’s family says she was on her way to school with her sisters last Monday morning when she stopped at a Smart & Final near Laurel and E. 97 Street in Watts.

However, Mayanin never attended school and her family does not know where she went. The teenager was last seen on video walking outside the store with a man her family did not know.

“I don’t know if it’s a friendly or an enemy,” said the girl’s father, Samuel Maldonado. “Of course, this is the last person we need to find to be able to answer some questions. To me, he looks strange. I don’t recognize the person, of course, so alarm bells immediately went off for me.”

Mayanin’s family says they reported her missing immediately. They described the teenager as a good student and athlete who participated in cross-country running and track and field.

They told ABC7 there was no reason to believe she ran away, adding that she did not have a boyfriend. Her family also said she left her phone at home.

“You are not in trouble,” the father said in a message to his daughter. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t come home. That we don’t love you, that we don’t accept you. We are home with open arms waiting for her to be found and come home.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the authorities.
