Quick-reacting lifeguards save teen’s life at Stark County Aquatic Park

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – Lifeguards at Baylor Beach Park are credited with rescuing a 13-year-old boy from drowning Wednesday afternoon.

“When we arrived on scene, they had already pulled her out of the water,” said Brewster Fire Chief Chris Colucy. “They were performing CPR and other measures.”

These measures included connecting an automated external defibrillator, which can deliver an electrical shock to restore normal heart rhythm.

Colucy said the girl was unresponsive when she was put in the ambulance, but during the ride to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, she began arguing with paramedics in the back seat of the vehicle.

When she arrived at the hospital, Colucy said, the trauma doctor said the lifeguards saved the girl’s life.

“The intervention of the lifeguards on scene … saved the little girl’s life,” the fire chief said. “Without their heroic efforts, this little girl would not have survived.”

Brewster paramedics were called to the park’s lake at 3:54 p.m. Wednesday and arrived about 4 minutes later, Colucy said.

The girl was to be taken to a hospital in Akron after being stabilized at Mercy Hospital, Colucy said. He said she is expected to recover.
