9-year-old girl is third child to die – police release further details

A third child has died after a horrific stabbing in Southport.

Police announced yesterday that two children were killed when a knifeman attacked people at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class yesterday morning (Monday).

A third child has since died, Merseyside Police confirmed this afternoon. The victim, a nine-year-old girl, died in hospital in the early hours of this morning.

Officials also released further details about the two other children killed in the stabbing, two girls aged six and seven.

Eight other children suffered stab wounds in the attack. Five of them are in critical condition.

Merseyside Police confirmed that two adults are also fighting for their lives in hospital after being injured in the incident.

A police statement said: “Sadly, we have to confirm that a third child has died as a result of a knife attack in Southport yesterday morning, Monday 29 July.

“The nine-year-old girl died in hospital in the early hours of today, Tuesday 30 July. We can confirm that the children who died yesterday were girls aged six and seven.

“Eight other children sustained stab wounds in the attack, five of whom are in critical condition. Two adults are also in critical condition after being injured in the incident.”

“Our specialist family liaison officers are supporting families during this terrible time.”

Following the stabbing, police arrested a 17-year-old boy from the village of Banks, near Southport, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He remains in police custody.

Police said a name mentioned on social media in connection with the suspect was “false.”

Officials added: “We would urge people not to speculate about the details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing.”
