Blue Jays sign another pitcher from the waiver list to reinforce Triple-A

If you feel like you’ve seen the same article on this site 10 times in the last month or so, you’re not making it up. The Blue Jays continue to trade players from the high minors or make waiver claims to complete their pitching staff in Triple-A.

Time and again, the Jays have managed to bring in players with major league experience (even if it isn’t much and it hasn’t gone well) to place them in Triple-A. Some of them have actually made the major league roster, like Ryan Burr, Tommy Nance, Yerry Rodriguez and Jose Cuas.

On Monday, the Blue Jays announced on social media (X-Link) that left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas has been claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers. He will join the Buffalo Bisons in Triple-A. In a corresponding move, Alek Manoah was placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Lucas on the 40-man roster.

Lucas, 27, broke into the major leagues last year with a six-game stint in the Oakland A’s bullpen. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings, giving him an 8.10 ERA. He made three relief appearances for the A’s this year before being claimed off waivers by the Tigers. The left-hander made three more appearances for Detroit before being called up again.

All in all, Lucas has an ERA of 10.29 this year thanks to eight earned runs (and one unearned run) on eleven hits in seven innings.

While his numbers in the major leagues don’t exactly inspire much confidence, he’s historically looked much better in the minor leagues. Lucas has a 3.31 ERA in 31 Triple-A games this year, striking out just under 10 batters in nine innings and posting a surprisingly low H/9 of 7.5.

This move isn’t exactly what Blue Jays fans want, but he will help fill out a Bisons roster that has suffered quite a few injuries over the course of the 2024 season. He’s a multi-inning reliever who will potentially spend some time out of the major league bullpen if he can prove he belongs on the Bisons.

Manoah, 26, had his season ended prematurely after just five major league appearances. He had a 3.70 ERA in 24.1 innings and showed flashes of great potential at times. Instead of restoring his reputation after a miserable performance in 2023, he is out for the year after undergoing UCL surgery in June.
