Developer gets green light to build two new floors on a block of flats in Cambridge

Two new floors may be built on an existing block of flats in Cambridge, more than doubling the number of apartments on the site. It has been agreed that the new floors will be built on Mayfair Court in Milton Road, which was originally built around 50 years ago. The building currently comprises six flats over three floors.

According to the developer’s plans, eight new studio apartments will be built, with four apartments each on the new “upper third floor and fourth floor”. An agreement was reached in 2022 to build six new apartments on two new floors above the building. The developer, Paul Scott, applied for permission for the extension under permitted development rights, which allow some development without full planning permission.

Planning documents submitted to Cambridge City Council state: “The development proposals will not have a significant impact on the motorways in the area, the site is not at significant risk of pollution or flooding and, importantly, it will positively impact on the local area and be in line with surrounding development. Neighbours’ quality of life will also be protected.”

Planning authorities said the latest application was “almost identical” to previous plans to build six apartments on the roof of the building. After reviewing the proposals, officials concluded that no prior approval was required and granted planning permission.
