Pirates place 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes back on the IL, add OF/1B Billy McKinney and RHP Hunter Stratton

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list on Monday due to back inflammation. This marks the second time this season and the fifth time in the last three years that the Gold Glove winner has remained on the injured list due to back problems.

Hayes, 27, is coming off the worst season of his career, hitting .233/.283/.290 with nine doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs in 96 games. He posted a .196 batting average in August, including 1 for 24 in the last six games.

The Pirates have opted to sign outfielder/first baseman Billy McKinney and recalled right-handed reliever Hunter Stratton from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on the 40-man roster, they have designated for assignment right-handed reliever Ryder Ryan.

In addition, outfielder Joshua Palacios (left thigh) was recalled from his rehab, removed from the injured list and sent to Indianapolis.

The moves mark the Pirates debut for McKinney, who was signed from the New York Yankees in December. The 29-year-old left-hander had a batting average of .295/.396/.450 with five doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs in 40 games in Indianapolis.

In 311 games over six major league seasons, McKinney has a batting average of .209/.284/.390 with 36 doubles, 34 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Stratton is 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, five holds and one save in 36 2/3 innings in 34 appearances for the Pirates this season.
