As of Monday, August 19, at 12 noon, twelve people had applied for nine seats on various district councils. The application deadline for the local elections in Petersburg ends on Tuesday, August 20, at 4:30 p.m. This year, there are 14 open positions and all have a three-year term.

There will be at least one competitive race. Five candidates have filed for two seats on the Petersburg City Assembly. Incumbents Bob Lynn and Thomas Fine-Walsh are both running to keep their seats. James Valentine, owner of Viking Travel and a coach in the school district, is also running for Assembly. Former Assembly member Marc Martinsen also filed for the seat on Friday, August 9. Tony Vinson, an employee at Petersburg Medical Center, filed for Assembly this morning.

The library board has all ballots up for vote. Incumbents Gina Esposito and Alec McMurren have both filed to run for re-election.

There are two seats on the Port Authority ballot, and incumbents Daniel Cardenas and Donald Spigelmyre have both filed to run for re-election.

Incumbent Public Safety Committee Chairman John Havrilek has filed his application. He was appointed to the position in July when committee member Mark Testoni left Petersburg. There is an open seat on the committee and so far he is running unopposed.

There are two seats open on the school board. Incumbent Carey Case has run for re-election. Incumbent Jay Lister has not done so.

And there are two open positions on the hospital board. Incumbent Heather Conn has run for re-election, while incumbent Mika Hasbrouk has not.

No one filed for the remaining three seats on the ballot, including two open seats on the Planning Commission. Incumbents Sally Dwyer and John Jensen did not seek re-election.

There is only one seat left open for Parks and Rec, held by Adam Caster, who has not filed to run.

If no new seats can be filled in the October election, the Petersburg Borough Assembly will appoint board members to one-year terms. Those seats would then be up for election again next year for two-year terms.

The deadline to submit a candidacy is August 20 at 4:30 p.m. Interested parties can find the documents upstairs in City Hall or at petersburgak.gov. Candidates can drop off completed documents at City Hall.
