WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024 – Day 4 Live Blog: Puerto Rico beats Italy to qualify for Super Round, Venezuela defeats Netherlands – World Baseball Softball Confederation
Welcome to the live blog of Day 4 of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024. After three days of matches, the Super Round picture is taking shape, with some teams looking to secure their place in the next round while others are trying to stay in the race ahead of the opening round finale tomorrow. All matches are available on the WBSC’s official streaming platform, GameTime.
Puerto Rico qualified for the Super Round after beating Italy 11-4 in Barranquilla. The Boricuas are still undefeated and will close the opening round against Japan tomorrow. Italy improved its record to 1-3.
Venezuela secured a very important victory this morning, beating the Netherlands 11-1 at the 11 de Noviembre stadium in Cartagena. The Venezuelan team now has a 2-2 record and goes into the final day of the opening round in a good position to qualify for the Super Round. The Netherlands improved their record to 1-3.

Anthony Badillo and Joseph Mendez combined for seven hits, four RBIs and five runs to lead Puerto Rico’s lineup in today’s 11-4 victory over Italy to open Day 4 of the World Cup. With the win, Puerto Rico secured its spot in the Super Round.
Badillo batted 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, while Mendez delivered a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs and one run scored. They had seven of the 12 Puerto Rican hits in the game.
Roldiel Maysonet was the game winner, pitching three innings with two hits, one run scored and two strikeouts.
With this result, Puerto Rico remains undefeated and qualifies for the super round.
To close the day in Barranquilla, the Dominican Republic and Colombia will face off at 7pm. The two teams go into the match with the same record of 1-2 and this match could be decisive for their hopes of advancing to the Super Round. It is their first match in the history of the tournament.
Unbeaten Nicaragua will face Mexico at 7pm in Cartagena de Indias. Nicaragua is the only leader in Group B with a 3-0 record, while Mexico is a step behind at 2-1. So this is an important match, not only for the final group placing, but because it could also count for the Super Round. They have played one match in the past, a 16-4 victory for Mexico on August 24, 2012 in the first edition of this tournament.

Chinese Taipei 7 – 0 South Africa – Match by Match
Top1 – Chinese Taipei scores seven runs on four hits and builds a comfortable lead. An RBI triple from Cheng-Yu Shih opened the decisive inning for the Asian champions. The score is 7-0.

Venezuela 11 – 1 Netherlands – Result
Top7 – Venezuela extends the lead with RBI singles by Santiago Soto and Camilo Gutierrez. The game is now 11-1.
Below 6. – The Netherlands score their first run of the game. With one out on the scoreboard, Davey-Jay Rijke doubled and then scored on a run-scoring single by Raishelnon Ogenia. The score is 9-1.
Top6 – After two quick outs, Venezuela loaded the bases with two singles by Jesus Chavez and Sebastian Silva and a walk. Chavez and Silva scored on two wild pitches. The game is now 9-0.
Top-5 – Venezuela breaks the game open with a five-run rally. RBI hits by Andres Triana (2) and Francisco Marquez (1). Venezuela now leads 7-0.
Top3 – Venezuela extended its lead to 2-0. Richard Borthomierth hit a triple and four pitches later Camilo Gutierrez crossed the plate with a sacrifice fly.
Top1 – Francisco Marquez scored the first run of the game for Venezuela. He hit a single to open the inning, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. From there, he scored a run on a grounder to shortstop Richard Borthomierth. Venezuela leads 1-0.

preview – The Netherlands and Venezuela will play an important match in Group B at the 11 de Noviembre Stadium. With both teams on a 1-2 record, the winner of this match will put themselves in an excellent position to chase one of the top three spots in the final group table. They have never played in the U-15 age group. First pitch at 10:30 a.m.
Italy 4 – 11 Puerto Rico – Result
Lower 5. – Puerto Rico sent 11 batters into the inning and scored five runs on five hits and four walks. Puerto Rico now has a comfortable 11-4 lead. Puerto Rico has scored at least one run in each of its five at-bats.
Lower 4. – An RBI single by Arnaldo Rodriguez gives Puerto Rico a two-run lead again. Anthony Badillo, hit by a pitch, scored the run for the Caribbean team. The game is now 6-4.
Top4 – Italy respond with a run from Patrick Silva into the gap in left midfield to put Pablo Suarez home, the score is now 5-4.
Lower third – An RBI triple to right field by Saul Maldonado brought Jesus Carrasquillo home from first base. Puerto Rico now leads 5-3.
Top3 – Italy takes a one-run lead. After two quick outs, Michael Moronta and Ivan Larice hit back-to-back singles and Leonardo Prizzon got a walk to load the bases. Francesco Carlini hit a decisive two-run single to center field to make it 4-3. Italy has more hits than Puerto Rico (6-3).
Below 2. – With two outs on the scoreboard, Puerto Rico extended its lead. Bradley Rodriguez drew a full-count walk and then Anthony Badillo slammed a line drive triple into the right field corner to score. Badillo crossed the plate on a single by Joseph Mendez. Puerto Rico now leads 4-1.
Below 1. – Bradley Rodriguez walked with one out and ran from first base to home after Anthony Badillo hit a double into the gap in left center. Badillo then scored on a stolen first and third base. Puerto Rico takes a 2-1 lead.
Top1 – Italy takes the lead in the first inning. The European team loaded the bases with two singles and a walk and scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field by Alessio Casanta. Italy leads 1-0.

preview – In the first game of the day at Edgar Renteria Stadium, Puerto Rico and Italy face off with different objectives. Puerto Rico has played some of the best baseball of the tournament and has remained in Group A with a perfect record. After yesterday’s first win, Italy (1-2) needs a win to stay in the race for a place in the next round. This will be their first game in the history of the competition. Kick-off is at 10:30 a.m. local time.
