“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” pokes fun at Olympic commentary on KGW’s morning news show

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver is taking a short break at the end of the summer and will return with new episodes on September 8. But the last episode before the break on August 18 included a little dig at something Portland-related.

In this case, the “And Now” segment, which airs between the opening segment and Oliver’s more detailed topic in the second half of the show, again featured a montage of local news anchors.

Regular viewers of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” know that “And Now” montages often poke fun at how news programs across the country cover current events. In June, for example, an “And Now” segment titled “People on TV want you to know this is no laughing matter” unearthed a much-mocked 2020 video from the Oregon Health Authority in which an official dressed as a clown offers dire advice on how to safely celebrate Halloween amid the pandemic.

The August 18 “And Now” segment of “Last Week Tonight” was titled “News anchors cope with life after the Olympics.”

As usual, there were shots of news anchors from around the country making remarks that Last Week Tonight found humorous. And once again, there was an Oregon angle.

The montage included a moment from “KGW News at Sunrise” and showed co-anchor Chynna Greene flanked by fellow anchor Drew Carney and weather anchor Rod Hill.

“I don’t know about you,” Greene said, “but I’m kind of sad that the Olympics are over. It was so much fun.”

“The Olympics also had some advantages for me personally,” said Carney. “For example, we didn’t have a 30-minute newscast for two weeks.”

Even with that gentle jab, the KGW morning crew came out better than a host from another network who mused that the Olympics were one of those things that temporarily united us all, then added, “Now we can go back to hating each other.”

The segment ended with a Los Angeles news anchor giving her opinion on all the emotions she felt while watching the Olympics. Then she matter-of-factly moved on to a story that definitely had nothing to do with it: “Okay,” she said, “this morning, emergency crews recovered the massive whale carcass that washed up on the shores of Torrance Beach this weekend.”
