Gonda:

Two sisters allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a river here on Monday while their father accused his son-in-law of abusing his younger daughters, police said.

The father, Suresh Kumar, claimed that his daughters – Sunita (19) and Punita (17) – were abused by Ashok Kumar, the husband of his eldest daughter Anita.

The two girls left their home in the Mankapur area this morning saying they were going away and never returning, Kumar told police.

The sisters escaped from the Bisuhi river and jumped into it, said station house officer Santosh Kumar Mishra, adding that their bodies were later recovered from the river with the help of villagers.

Kumar said he did not take the girls seriously at the time and assumed they had only gone outside to quench their thirst. However, when the girls did not return after some time, the villagers started searching.

They reached the river as some villagers saw the duo going there and informed the police.

The sisters tied each other up with a cloth, police said.

Sunita had completed Class 12 this year while Punita was in Class 10, police said.
