5 reasons why lemon water is the perfect start to the day

Lemon water is a hotly debated topic. While some claim it’s their secret to feeling healthy and energized, others firmly believe it’s good for nothing. Neither extreme is quite right – no drink can work miracles, but lemon water can provide a number of health benefits to the body. Here’s what nutritionist and dietitian Dr. Montse Folcha has to say about the health drink.

Does lemon water help prevent bloating?

Most people who advocate drinking (usually warm) water with lemon usually do so on an empty stomach in the morning to cleanse the body and boost metabolism. “Lemon is an acid,” says Dr. Folcha. “It helps balance the stomach’s natural acidity, which promotes healthy digestion and thus prevents bloating.” He recommends adding certain spices to lemon water to enhance the bloating-relieving effects—think fennel, basil, parsley, dill, cumin or coriander.

Can lemon water improve digestion?

“Lemon water helps the stomach to secrete gastric juices effectively,” explains Dr. Folcha. “This leads to better digestion in general. Anyone suffering from excessive stomach acid – such as reflux – should avoid drinking lemon water as it can make the problem worse.”

Does lemon water quench thirst?

“Lemons naturally contain various acids (like citric acid) that stimulate saliva production and relieve thirst,” says Dr. Folcha. Just be sure to always mix them with water—drinking lemon alone can damage your tooth enamel.

Does lemon water improve skin?

Our skin loves vitamin C, which is found in all citrus fruits, including lemons. Studies show that taking vitamin C improves the appearance of skin, and Dr. Folcha agrees. “Vitamin C is necessary for the proper functioning of blood vessels and for the health of bones, teeth and skin. It also helps in the formation of collagen and stimulating the body’s natural wound-healing mechanisms.”

Is lemon water good for overall health?

Dr Folcha says that drinking water with lemon regularly not only aids digestion and skin, but is also fantastic for general wellbeing. “It can boost the immune system, giving you a better chance of fighting infections,” she says. Plus, it’s a great drink to have anytime you’re feeling sick – add a little honey or ginger to help with a cold.
