BC Hydro opens more powerful fast-charging station in Fort St. John

FORT ST. JOHN: BC Hydro’s electric vehicle fast-charging network is expanding and getting even faster with the addition of two new 180-kilowatt chargers in Fort St. John.

“An important part of our CleanBC Climate Plan is to help people switch from a gasoline-powered vehicle to one powered by BC’s clean electricity – whether you’re driving in a city, a small town or a more remote area of our vast and beautiful province,” said Josie OsborneMinister for Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “This new charging station for electric vehicles in Fort St. John continues our work with BC Hydro and other partners to make cleaner options more accessible and affordable for all British Columbians.’

The new 180-kilowatt chargers are located in the Canadian Tire Parking (9716 Alte Fortstraße) and can add 180 kilometers of range to an average electric vehicle in about 10 minutes. This site also includes a curb-free design and lower displays on the new charger for better accessibility.

In addition to being faster, the devices also offer dual charging or power sharing, allowing two customers to use the same charger. For example, a 180-kilowatt charger can be customized to provide two 90-kilowatt charging ports, allowing more drivers to access public charging stations at the same time.

“These new charging stations will help British Columbians get to their destinations faster and more reliably, all with clean energy,” said George HeymanMinister for the Environment and Climate Strategy. “More electric car chargers will bring both environmental and economic benefits as we work towards reducing our climate-damaging emissions by 40% by 2030.”

The introduction of electric vehicles in British Columbia has increased significantly. There are now more than 160,000 electric vehicles on the road in BC and BC Hydro predicts that there will be between 700,000 and 900,000 electric vehicles in the next 10 years.

“British Columbians are adopting electric vehicles faster than any other jurisdiction in Canada and that is why we continue to invest in the growth of our current system and expand our fast charging network across BC,” says Chris O’RileyPresident and CEO of BC Hydro. “These new chargers are part of our expansion plan to geographically connect our EV fast-charging network with a station at least every 150 kilometers across BC.”

BC Hydro’s nationwide fast-charging network currently includes 242 charging stations at 97 locations in communities across BC. The chargers are funded in partnership with the Province of BC and Natural Resources Canada.
