Kevin Bacon is about to get going again!

On Friday, the actor whose cult film Unbound recently celebrated its 40th anniversary – appeared via video chat on the Today Show to surprise staff and students at Payson High School in Payson, Utah with some very exciting news.

“I was so impressed by everything that happened there and this crazy idea to get me to come back,” said Bacon, 65, who filmed the 1984 movie at the school. “I was amazed at the work you all put into this, with the musical and the flash mobs and the reenactments.”

“That’s not lost on me, not to mention the fact that you’ve involved our foundation, SixDegrees.org, and you’re trying to find ways to give back to your community. That’s really inspiring, so thank you. Thank you very much. And I’ll come. I have to come,” he said.

After people gathered in the school gym to watch his announcement erupted in cheers, Bacon added, “Thanks, guys. Let’s dance.”

Unboundthe film that made Bacon a star follows the actor as teenager Ren McCormack, who moves to a small town with his mother Ethel (Frances Lee McCain). After Ren and Lori Singer’s character Ariel fall in love, they team up with their friends Rusty (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Willard (the late Chris Penn) and other classmates to lift a ban on dancing in the town imposed by Ariel’s father, Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow).

In a recent episode of the actor’s show Six Degrees with Kevin Bacon In a podcast, he recalled that the final scenes of his classic musical drama were altered to remove slow-motion sequences that were not well received by early audiences.

“The end of Unbound has this big dance sequence and in the original, when we originally shot it in Utah, it was in slow motion,” Bacon said. “When they tested the film, everyone said, ‘We don’t want slow motion, we want to see people go wild. We want to feel the music and see everyone rocking out.'”

“So we went to California a year later and reshot the ending, but not in slow motion, but with new choreography and new dancers and a whole bunch of new things,” he added, noting that he believes the changes made “definitely helped the film a lot.”

When asked if there could ever be a sequel, Bacon replied on the podcast last month: “Never say never, (but) I think it would be a disaster.”

But Singer, 66, has an idea – just in case. As she told PEOPLE in February, “I don’t know if Kevin even remembers this, but I actually had this idea that Ariel grows up and goes to New York, where she wanted to be, and (Ren) stays there.”

“(Ren) stays in town and becomes a bigger deal. He becomes the city attorney or whatever,” she continued. “(Ariel) comes back because her father is sick.”

“I mean, I just played with this idea years ago and we talked about it and joked about it,” Singer clarified. “But it was just something we could get together and talk about and laugh about.”

Ultimately, however, the actress isn’t sure if she wants a follow-up film. She told PEOPLE: “The film was so pure that I kind of agree with Kevin… but you never know.”
