John Oliver criticizes JD Vance for criticizing Kamala Harris in his speech

John Oliver believes that Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance should stop “calling people names for enjoying things” during the campaign.

“The Trump campaign continued to try to counteract the enthusiasm for the new Democratic slate, with JD Vance – a man who practically looks like he’s stuck 10 percent of the way to turning into a werewolf – desperately trying to portray the joy over Harris’ recent rallies as something negative,” Oliver said at the start of Sunday’s broadcast. Last week tonight.

He showed a C-SPAN clip of Vance giving a speech in Byron Center, Michigan, last week criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to accept the Democratic nomination for president at the DNC on Thursday.

“She says she’s having fun, but while she’s having fun, Americans are suffering because of her policies,” he said. “When she laughs during a speech, remember that there are American families who are still crying today because they can’t afford groceries. When she does these rallies and events and does these fake dances, remember that there are parents who have lost their children to drugs or violence and who will never see their children move again, let alone dance.”

Oliver’s response: “What are you doing? Scolding people for being happy about things because sadder things are happening elsewhere is a lousy move. Although it makes me curious to see what Vance is like in other social situations.”

Oliver imagined a hypothetical situation in which Vance takes his children to SeaWorld. He imagined Vance saying, “All right, kids, SeaWorld is having fun. Meet me back here at 2 o’clock, and remember that dolphins sometimes kill porpoises for fun. Have fun! By the way, scientists call this porpoise murder.”

Oliver also made a joke at his expense.

“If you’re interested, you won’t get vice president by depressing everyone with depressing facts about things you like. That’s how you put people to sleep once a week while you age like a president at war,” he joked, showing a photo of himself. “Get out of my corner.”
