Following a strong earthquake, a volcano has erupted in the Russian Far East, raising fears of further seismic activity.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, triggering an eruption of the highly active Shivelukh volcano.

The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team issued a temporary “Code Red” warning for air traffic as the eruption emitted ash clouds reaching a height of five kilometers.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Shiveluch volcano erupted shortly after the earthquake early Sunday.

Published images from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology show that the massive ash cloud from the volcano extended over 490 kilometers (304 miles) to the east and southeast.

In addition, the Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands spewed ash up to a height of 2.5 kilometers, although the institute could not establish a concrete connection between the earthquake and the eruptions.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 108 kilometers southeast of the nearest city and at a depth of 6 kilometers below the seabed, according to Russian emergency officials.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the TASS news agency reported, according to AP, that no commercial aircraft were affected and aviation infrastructure was not disrupted, despite the issuance of a “Code Red” warning.

Researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences issued a warning, saying the quakes could be a sign of a larger earthquake with a magnitude of about 9.0 that could occur in southeastern Kamchatka within the next 24 hours.
