BMC launches campaign to remove defunct trident lamp posts

Calcutta: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a campaign to remove defunct Trident light poles above salt lake. City officials said the decision to remove the trident light poles was taken last year. “Recently, a work order was issued to an agency to carry out the work,” an official said.
Such poles have already been removed from the stretch from PNB Island junction to CA Island. The action has now been initiated on the Second Avenue stretch. “There are many such poorly maintained poles which could cause accidents. Also, there is always a chance that these damaged poles could become power lines during rainstorms. It is good that the BMC has decided to remove these,” said Soumyajit Roy, a local resident.
The holes where these poles were placed will also be filled in at the same time, officials said. City authorities said they are working to replace old sodium vapor lamps with LED street lights.
“Currently, there are around 30,000 LED street lights in the BMC area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur. There are plans to procure and install another 1,000 LED lights, of which 500 will be of 120 watts and the rest of 70 watts,” officials said.
The state government has sanctioned a funding of Rs 2.9 crore for installation of LED lights in Salt Lake and the first seven wards, including Rajarhat Gopalpur. In New Town, the NKDA plans to restore all the defunct street lights in Action Area III with the help of an agency.
