Riley Greene and Jasson Dominguez added as 27th men for Little League Classic

The Yankees and Tigers face off tonight in Williamsport for the Little League Classic, and due to the special nature of the game, both clubs are allowed to add a 27th player to their active rosters. The two teams have used that extra roster spot in a particularly notable way, with the Yankees adding a star junior player to the team. Jason Dominguez Outfielder activated by Triple-A and the Tigers Riley Greene from the 10-day injured list.

Although Dominguez is in the starting lineup tonight, it looks like it will be just a cup of coffee for the 21-year-old in the Major League, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com) that Dominguez will return to Triple-A after the game. Of course, plans could change in the event of an injury, but for now it looks like the Yankees are only using the right-handed Dominguez to fill in for left-handed Alex Verdugo in left field since left-handed Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit.

Tonight will be Dominguez’s first MLB game since last September, when he posted a .258/.303/.677 batting average with four home runs in his first 33 major league appearances. But just when “The Martian” seemed to be living up to expectations, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery that sidelined him until he returned for a rehab stint in Single-A ball in mid-May. Dominguez was quickly promoted back to Triple-A, but then suffered an oblique strain in June that sidelined him for another six weeks.

Dominguez has a batting average of .298/.365/.477 with seven home runs in his 167 combined PA across three levels of the Yankees’ farm system this season, so while he doesn’t dominate minor league pitching, his numbers are still pretty solid (especially for a player battling so many injuries). Under normal circumstances, he’d probably be in the major leagues by now if New York’s outfield wasn’t so crowded. Aaron Richter, Juan Sotoand Verdugo form the starting outfield trio, and Giancarlo Stanton has blocked the DH spot, leaving Dominguez with little room for regular playing time.

GM Brian Cashman said last week: “There’s no way to get him up there right now. It’s nice to know he’s there. He’s just knocking the rust off and waiting for his chance when it comes..” Today’s one-game cameo doesn’t really disprove Cashman’s statement, as the team would certainly prefer to see Dominguez continue his development with regular action in Triple-A rather than just playing sporadically in New York. It’s worth noting that Verdugo has been in a deep slump for over three months, so heading into the postseason, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Dominguez was promoted to take on the lion’s share of the work in left field.

Greene last played on July 25, as a right hamstring strain sidelined the outfielder for nearly a month. The Tigers don’t have to make a corresponding roster change today because of the 27-man rule, but some sort of roster adjustment will be necessary before Detroit’s next game on Tuesday against the Cubs.

In his third major league season, Greene has continued to make great strides as the Tigers’ rising star, hitting .264/.357/.485 in 427 PA at-bats with 17 home runs. Thanks to this performance at the plate and his excellent work as Detroit’s primary left fielder, Greene has already posted 2.8 fWAR and his success has been recognized with his first All-Star nomination. While the Tigers have not yet reached the turning point in their rebuilding process, Greene certainly looks like a cornerstone in the club’s future plans.
