Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: India will not host the tournament if withdrawn by Bangladesh

India will not host the Women’s T20 World Cup in October if it has to be moved from Bangladesh, says Jay Shah, secretary of the Indian Cricket Association (BCCI).

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned earlier this month after weeks of deadly anti-government protests and fled to India.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said it was “closely monitoring developments” in the country, which will host the tournament from October 3 to 20.

Shah said the ICC had asked the BCCI if it might host the event instead, but the BCCI had “flatly refused”.

“We would still be in the monsoon season and hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup next year,” Shah told the Times of India., external

“I don’t want to give the impression that I want to host two consecutive world championships.”

More than 400 people were killed in weeks-long student demonstrations in Bangladesh that began as a protest against quotas in the public service.

The ICC said it was working with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and independent security advisers to assess the situation.

Ten teams, including England and Scotland, are taking part in the Women’s T20 World Cup, with 23 matches taking place at venues in the capital Dhaka and Sylhet.

Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates are considered possible alternative hosts should the tournament have to be postponed.
