The Chevrolet Traverse is all-new for the 2024 model year, ushering in the SUV’s third generation. The new edition is designed to give the Traverse a classy, ​​upscale feel and offer plenty of cool new details like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and even light animations that greet you as you approach your Traverse. Chevy’s goal seems to be to offer a luxury SUV at a mid-range price.

Did they deliver? The only way we can find out is to build one ourselves and see what it costs us and what we get for our money. Here’s what it costs to transform the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse into the ultimate luxury SUV.

How much will a 2024 Chevrolet Traverse initially cost you?

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is available in four trim levels, from the base LS model to the top-of-the-line RS. Chevrolet has confirmed that a Premier trim will be available for 2025, and they may add the High Country back into the mix at some point in the future, but the L and Redline models have been officially discontinued. That leaves the RS as the undisputed top option, so we’re going with that one. The previous-generation Traverse is still available in Limited trim and is sold alongside the new model, but we’re specifically looking at the top-of-the-line third-generation trim today.

All four trim levels come with the same engine, a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-liter engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. The Z71 only comes with all-wheel drive, but other than that, the main difference between the trim levels is how many standard features the SUV offers. Here’s what we get with the RS:

We noted in our first review of the Chevy Traverse that the new model is a clear improvement over the previous generation. With the RS’s standard features, you could be very happy with this purchase right out of the box. With the heated leather seats and the trailering package that increases towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds, you already have a full-size pickup that’s very comfortable and more capable than some pickups. But fully loaded means we can get all the extras, so let’s see what’s up for grabs.

We couldn’t find an overlanding tent, but the good news is that the Traverse is bigger than some motel rooms, so that’s hardly necessary. In total, our additional costs came to $4,372, which, combined with our Traverse RS at $60,390, brings the total cost for a fully equipped model to 64,762 USD.

But there are delivery fees, taxes, registration costs and interest to be added on. So let’s calculate how much this thing will cost us before we can drive it home.

Taxes and Interest: The Total Cost of a Fully Equipped Chevy Traverse

Just FYI, your numbers will be very different. 6% is the national average sales tax rate, but yours could be very different. Maybe you need to put more or less down, you want to extend the loan term by a year, or you want to pay off the SUV as quickly as possible. These numbers are just here so we have a ballpark idea to use as an example.

Based on these calculations, after five years you would pay 88% on principal and 12% on the loan, resulting in a total interest cost of $8,548.

Is a fully loaded 2024 Chevrolet Traverse worth the price?

If the fully loaded Chevy Traverse isn’t quite worth its nearly $65,000 base price, that’s only because the RS trim is nearly perfect, fresh off the lot, and there are easier ways to keep your sodas cool than a $1,500 Dometic cooler. With a base price of $56,200, the Traverse competes with competitively priced rivals like the Kia Telluride and Mazda CX-90, and the latter is an exceptional vehicle.

You won’t regret buying a fully loaded 2024 Chevy Traverse, but you also won’t notice that most of the extras are missing if you drive it home as is. Still, there are a few key items we consider essential. First, the $995 iridescent pearl may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it’s the only three-coat paint job. Second, you really don’t want to drive through the woods without the $195 highway safety kit and first aid kit. And finally, the $100 engine block heater could extend your engine’s life expectancy by another hundred thousand miles if you live somewhere with frigid winters.

Then, if you need it, grab the $949 roof-mounted roof box and the $649 HD dash cam if you want to record your expeditions for posterity, and you’ve got the ultimate Chevrolet luxury adventure vehicle for just $59,088, not including delivery costs. Yes, there are far cheaper SUVs out there, but the Traverse still punches above its weight even with the extra cost of some premium accessories.
