Rain delays the start of the NASCAR Cup race at Michigan International Speedway
UPDATE: After the rain delay, the drivers took the green flag at 4:55 p.m.
BROOKLYN, MI – NASCAR fans were able to see a few formation laps at Michigan International Speedway before the cars were shut down due to rain during Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400.
The green flag was only raised when it started to rain. The race was scheduled to start shortly after 2:30 p.m.
The cars were taken to the pit lane and covered. It rained lightly at first, but around 2:50 p.m. heavy rain began. Shortly after 3:00 p.m. the rain stopped and jet dryers were brought onto the track to dry the asphalt.
By 3:40 p.m. the track was mostly dry when rain started again. After that the track was sprayed again with jet dryers.
Here’s the hourly chance of precipitation at 4:15 p.m. according to the National Weather Service.
- 4 p.m.: 54% chance of rain
- 5 p.m.: 64% chance of rain
- 6pm: 60% chance of rain
- 7pm: 41% chance of rain
- 8pm: 19% chance of rain
Rain was also a problem on Saturday, causing four delays throughout the day. Cup qualifying was canceled, but the Xfinity Series race was able to be completed.
Since there is no lighting at MIS, races must be completed before sunset at 8:31 p.m.

Denny Hamlin will start on the pole based on a formula after Saturday’s qualifying was canceled due to rain. Tyler Reddick will start second, followed by Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson, Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain, Ryan Blaney, William Byron and Austin Dillon.
Three drivers from Michigan are in the race: Carson Hocevar of Portage (starting position 11), Brad Keselowski of Rochester Hills (starting position 15) and Erik Jones of Byron (starting position 28).
