The last 5 Kings lottery tips at a glance

The Sacramento Kings selected Devin Carter 13th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft after being selected in the lottery during a disappointing season.

While Carter is expected to miss half of the season due to shoulder surgery, we can look at Sacramento’s draft history to get a general idea of what their lottery picks typically look like.

Here are Sacramento’s final five lottery picks and a quick look at her career so far:

2022: Keegan Murray, 4th overall pick

Keegan Murray, 22, was one of the older prospects when he was drafted, but the Kings took a risk. Murray was undoubtedly a league-ready forward and broke the record for most three-point shots made in his rookie season.

After a surprisingly successful rookie year, Murray made a big leap defensively in his sophomore season while slowly improving other aspects of his offensive game.

As a sophomore, Murray averaged 15.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game with shooting percentages of 45.4/35.8/83.1. Although his three-point efficiency dropped compared to his impressive rookie year, Murray’s overall improvements have given Kings fans hope for his future.

In year three, Murray is expected to be a valuable 3-and-D wing alongside new frontcourt teammate DeMar DeRozan and could emerge as an All-Star player at the two-way position at any time.

2021: Davion Mitchell, 9th overall pick

The Kings drafted Davion Mitchell in the top 10 in 2021 and the defensive-minded point guard came into the league with a good feeling.

After winning an NCAA championship with the Baylor Bears, Mitchell found himself in a prominent role as a rookie as starting point guard De’Aaron Fox battled an injury. As a rookie, Mitchell averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Unfortunately for Mitchell, his rookie season was his peak. Over the next two seasons, Mitchell averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 assists per game and struggled to keep his spot in the rotation last season.

The Kings decided to give up Mitchell in the offseason and sent him along with Sasha Vezenkov to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jalen McDaniels.

2020: Tyrese Haliburton, 12th overall pick

Tyrese Haliburton is an absolute NBA star and two-time All-Star who won a gold medal with the US team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The highlight of his career in Sacramento was his involvement in one of the biggest transfers in franchise history.

After the Kings signed Haliburton late in the 2020 lottery, he immediately became a key player alongside fellow backcourt player De’Aaron Fox. In a season and a half, Hali averaged 13.6 points, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, showing just how good he can be.

But the Kings saw no future with a Haliburton-Fox backcourt and traded the young guard to the Indiana Pacers midway through the 2021-22 season. That blockbuster sent Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson to the Pacers in exchange for Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday and a 2023 second-round pick.

This is considered one of the most balanced blockbuster trades in recent memory, as Sabonis has developed into one of the league’s best big men in Sacramento and Haliburton’s career has skyrocketed since arriving in Indianapolis.

2018: Marvin Bagley III, 2nd overall pick

Marvin Bagley was one of Duke’s most touted prospects in 2018 and led to one of the biggest draft mistakes in NBA history. The top five picks in the 2018 NBA Draft:

1. Deandre Ayton, PH

2. Marvin Bagley III, SAC

3. Luka Doncic, DAL

4. Jaren Jackson Jr., MEM

5. Trae Young, ATL

In hindsight, it’s a disaster that the Kings selected Bagley here, but at the time, the 6-foot-1 forward was expected to be a star. As a rookie, Bagley averaged 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, but his career has gotten worse every year since.

Bagley only appeared in 13 games in his second season and played 148 games over four seasons with the Kings. The Kings eventually gave up on the Bagley project and traded him to the Detroit Pistons in the 2021-22 season. In that four-team trade that sent Bagley to Detroit, the Kings received Donte DiVincenzo, Josh Jackson and Trey Lyles.

Lyles is the only member of the transfer to remain with the Kings to this day and was a valuable backup forward.

Since leaving Sacramento, Bagley’s stats have remained consistent and he may have found a permanent home with the Washington Wizards.

2017: De’Aaron Fox, 5th overall pick

One of Sacramento’s best draft picks in franchise history: De’Aaron Fox. The former All-Star has burst onto the scene as one of the NBA’s best point guards despite a slow start in his rookie year.

Over the past four seasons, Fox has averaged 25.1 points, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game, including one All-Star appearance, becoming the NBA’s all-time steals leader in 2023-24 and winning the 2022-23 Clutch Player of the Year award for the first time.

Fox, 26, has helped bring the Kings back to prominence after 16 consecutive years without a playoff appearance, and Sacramento has done its duty by building a solid roster around him.

Fox is now reaching his peak form and the Kings are expected to make another big leap towards the playoffs with the help of Domantas Sabonis and DeMar DeRozan.
