Georgia deputy dead after ambush, suspect commits suicide

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – In Georgia, a Paulding County police officer is dead after he was ambushed and shot following a domestic dispute Saturday night. The suspect later committed suicide.

Officers were alerted to an incident at a home in Hiram around 6:15 p.m. Eastern Time and were immediately met with gunfire. 30-year-old Deputy Brandon Cunningham was shot and later died.

Officials confirmed that a woman who was involved in the domestic dispute with the suspect was also shot. She was taken to an Atlanta-area hospital and is in stable condition.

Officials said the suspect committed suicide after barricading himself in his home.

“The male suspect, whose identity we have not yet determined, is deceased. He died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Ashley Henson, spokesperson for the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

The investigation is ongoing.

Deputy Cunningham was a police officer in Paulding County for about four years. He leaves behind two children.

“I ask this community, as always, to support us, to stand by us, to support us. It’s going to be a tough time for all of us and all of our people. I know what Paulding County is and I know the people here, I know what you’re going to do. I ask you to keep this family in your prayers.”
