Cailee Spaeny’s career is currently on a steep upward trajectory: She plays the title role of Priscilla, is co-lead actress in “Civil War”, is about to start the second season of the Emmy-winning series “Beef” and is currently the star of the well-reviewed and successful series “Alien: Romulus”.

But now some viewers are wondering why she didn’t get another role, namely that of Ellie Williams in season 2 of The Last of Us. Or at least it’s fun to wonder what could have been.

If you’ve seen both Alien: Romulus and played The Last of Us Part 2, this should be immediately apparent. The resemblance between Spaeny, especially in this film, and the aged, more combative Ellie is uncanny.

What makes it even better is the fact that Spaeny’s acting partner for much of the film is Isabela Merced, who is literally the actress who plays Ellie’s love interest Dina in the next season of The Last of Us. So it’s not just Spaeny who looks like Ellie, but there are also scenes with Dina, literally.

Of course, Spaeny has nothing to do with The Last of Us Season 2, as this adaptation picks up from Part 2. That role will continue to be played by Bella Ramsey, who was nominated for an Emmy for Season 1. Many wondered how she would take on the role before the season aired, and she didn’t look much like Ellie from the games, but she did an excellent job.

Part 2 is a different story. It is a five-year time jump from the games and Ellie is supposed to age noticeably physically and become harder and more intense. So now people are wondering again whether they should have stayed in the role, and I’ve actually heard some say that Spaeny should have replaced her for Season 2/Part 2, given how much she resembles Ellie from that game. She probably would have been too old to play young Ellie beforehand though (Spaeny is 26).

Isabela Merced went out of her way to praise Ramsey’s performance in Season 2:

“I’m really proud of Bella. If I were to wrap this up as one of the last interviews before we wrap, I would say I really hope Bella gets her flowers. They work really, really hard, physically and emotionally. One thing I learned from this is, ‘Wow, you can really admire people younger than you.’ You can really look up to them.”

Ramsey has been seen on set and even though they changed her hairstyle, she still looks young, although she is actually a bit older than Ellie was in part 2, now 20 years old. Given her performance in season 1, I’m sure they’ll do great here. And it’s not like her co-star Kaitlyn Dever is a hulking, muscle-bound tough girl like Abby is in the game. At least, that’s not what we know. think She gained 20 kilos of muscle for this role.

I look forward to seeing more work from Spaeny and Ramsey in The Last of Us Season 2. That was just a fun thing to note with Romulus.
