AIIMS neurosurgeon from Gujarat commits suicide in South Delhi apartment, suspected drug overdose

A 34-year-old neurosurgeon at AIIMS allegedly committed suicide at his house in south Delhi’s Gautam Nagar area on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Raj Ghoniya, a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. He was posted at the trauma centre of AIIMS.

According to police, Ghoniya probably died of an overdose as used medicine bottles and syringes were found in his house, PTI reported.

According to police, a suicide note was also found at the crime scene. In the letter, however, Ghoniya did not blame anyone.

The neurosurgeon was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he was declared dead.

“Around 2 pm on Sunday, Hauz Khas police station received a PCR call regarding the suicide of a doctor in Gautam Nagar area. Police arrived at the scene and found Ghoniya unconscious,” PTI quoted a senior police official as saying.

According to Delhi Police, initial investigation revealed that the reason for the suicide could be a family dispute. A suicide note was also found in the apartment, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, another doctors’ strike is taking place in the capital. The indefinite protest against the rape and murder of a doctor in Calcutta has been going on for a week since Sunday. The protests have led to disruptions in medical care and have had an impact on patients.

The doctors’ indefinite strike began on Monday and has now lasted for seven days.

Both private and public hospitals have joined the protest, fighting for justice for the victims and demanding a safety law for doctors.

Meanwhile, the Central Protection Act Action Committee, representing all RDAs of Delhi, announced the continuation of the strike after a meeting today, citing unresolved safety concerns for medical staff.

Since Monday, non-emergency services such as outpatient treatment and diagnostics as well as scheduled surgeries at city health facilities, including the centrally run AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and RML Hospital, have been affected.
