Lauren Coughlin takes second LPGA victory and secures a place in the Solheim Cup at the Women’s Scottish

IRVINE, Scotland – Lauren Coughlin pulled away with some excellent putting to finish with a 3-under-par 69 to win the Women’s Scottish Open on Sunday, her second LPGA title this summer, and secure a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

Coughlin, who won the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada three weeks ago, recovered from two early bogeys to lead Megan Khang on the front nine holes and Esther Henseleit of Germany on the back nine holes.

The 31-year-old American needed just one putt for the final seven holes on a cold day on the Ayrshire coast, and none of them was more devastating for Henseleit than the 16th hole. Coughlin was leading by three shots and ran into trouble in a bunker. She hit a 20-foot putt and holed the par putt.

She also saved a par from just off the green on the 17th hole and then rounded off her performance with a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole.

Coughlin finished 15 under par (273), four strokes ahead of Henseleit (70). It was Henseleit’s second consecutive runner-up finish after winning the Olympic silver medal at the Paris Games.

Coughlin, who played college golf at Virginia, earned enough Solheim Cup points to earn one of six automatic spots for the Sept. 13-15 match at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. It will be her Solheim Cup debut.

Khang was tied with Coughlin after five holes, but failed to score another birdie and had two bogeys, finishing with a 74. The American shared third place with Japanese Ayaka Furue, who shot a 68.

Englishman Charley Hull started with two bogeys in three holes and never got into the game. He finished the match with a 73 in fifth place, seven strokes behind.

The women now travel across Scotland to the AIG Women’s Open in St. Andrews, the last major championship of the year.
