UPS driver from Georgia saves woman who lost consciousness in 60-degree heat

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – A UPS delivery driver in Georgia is being hailed as a hero after going above and beyond to help a woman in distress on his route.

Raheem Cooper was on his delivery route on Monday when he saw an elderly woman lying unconscious in her driveway. He jumped out of his truck to see if anyone was at her home, called 911 and began to help the woman.

Another woman passing by also helped until the ambulance arrived.

“About five or six minutes later the ambulance arrived and I helped her get on the stretcher… It was only by the grace of God that we were able to help her,” Cooper said.

Cooper left his name and phone number with the family before continuing his planned journey. The next day, a Facebook post thanking him for his heroic efforts was shared thousands of times.

The post states that the woman Cooper helped was “not doing well” after a medical emergency. She fell in her driveway and her groceries were scattered everywhere. It was 102 degrees outside and it’s unclear how long the woman was laying there before Cooper stopped to help her.

“She certainly wouldn’t have made it if he hadn’t helped her. He even picked up her groceries afterwards,” the post said. “We need more people like Raheem in this world!!”

“It feels so great,” Cooper said. “It’s unbelievable… I’m happy with what I did, but I have to give all the glory to God because without Him I wouldn’t have been there, so I just thank God. What if that was a family member, my kids or me, in the heat of the sun? I just think when you see somebody that needs help, with God’s grace, you just have to do the best you can.”

Cooper’s mother was at Badcock Valdosta purchasing a piece of furniture for him when she heard the staff talking about the rescue.

“She told them it was her son, which was me, and they told me if I just got there they would give it to me for free. So I’m really blessed and just thank them for their blessing,” Cooper said.

Angel Burkett, operations manager at Badcock, says Cooper has been a long-time customer of her store, and after hearing from his mother and reading the many comments on Facebook, she and her team felt it was only right to honor him by gifting him the piece he had wanted to complete his bedroom set.

“In a world where there is so much hate, I think it’s important to recognize people who stop and do everything they can to make the world a better place,” Burkett said.

Cooper says this is proof that good things come to you when you do good things. He adds that he has been in contact with the family of the woman he helped and she is currently in the process of recovery.
