What we learned this week in the case of the missing girl who got off a bus in Detroit 7 months ago

DETROIT – We received new information this week in the case of a missing 13-year-old girl who was last seen seven months ago while getting off a school bus in Detroit.

Disappearance of Na’Ziyah Harris

Police said Na’Ziyah Harris, a 13-year-old student at JE Clark Preparatory Academy in Detroit, was last seen on January 9, 2024.

She got off a school bus at the corner of Cornwall Street and 3 Mile Drive, near the intersection of Warren Avenue and Outer Drive on Detroit’s east side.

“They have footage of her getting on the school bus and the bus driver said she got off at her usual stop like she normally does,” said Anette Harris, her grandmother and guardian.

The following day, the Detroit Public Schools Community District opened an investigation into Na’Ziyah’s disappearance. The case was then referred to the Detroit Police Department.

Officers searched the area where Na’Ziyah was last seen, scattering dogs and volunteers throughout the neighborhood, knocking on doors and conducting a grid search.

Police said additional searches would extend beyond Wayne County. Since then, more than a dozen searches have taken place in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Clinton Township.

Authorities have offered a $1,000 reward for information in this case.

Police and family members have not yet been able to determine how Na’Ziyah could have disappeared on the short stretch between the bus stop and her home.

“I want my baby to come home, and I ask in Jesus’ name – and I stand by my faith – that he will bring her home, and we can join together and find her,” Harris said. “We can make a difference.”

Arrest warrant filed

The Wayne County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to Local 4 on Thursday morning, August 15, 2024, that Detroit Police have requested an arrest warrant in the case.

Prosecutors are currently reviewing this request.

This update suggests that police believe they have collected enough evidence to charge someone in connection with Na’Ziyah’s disappearance.

The exact charges in the arrest warrant are unclear.
