Leagues Cup recap: Team fights back from early deficit to beat NYCFC on penalties

The Columbus Crew fell behind in the first minute, but won on penalties against visiting New York City FC on Saturday evening and advanced to the semi-finals of the Leagues Cup.

A goal from Alonso Martinez put NYCFC in the lead before Cucho Hernandez equalized the game in the 41st minute and crowned the regular goal victory.

The Crew won the shootout 4-3 after New York City’s Santiago Rodriguez fired a shot over the crossbar in the fifth period before DeJuan Jones converted a penalty kick, allowing Columbus to host the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.

Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte saved a penalty attempt by Maxi Moralez in the third round of the shootout. Matt Freese reacted immediately and stopped Diego Rossi.

Hernandez and NYCFC’s James Sands scored in the fourth frame, setting up the dramatic ending.

Union 1, Mazatlan 1 (Union wins 4:3 on penalties)

Andre Blake saved two shots in the shootout, and despite playing a man down in the second half, Philadelphia reached the Leagues Cup semifinals for the second consecutive year with a win over Mazatlan in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia’s Tai Baribo received his second yellow card in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, but teammate Mikael Uhre scored two minutes later to give Union a 1-0 lead. Alonso Escoboza equalized in the 59th minute.

Blake stopped David Colman in the first round of the shootout and fended off Alan Torres in the third. Samuel Adeniran hit the post for the Union in the fourth round, but Jesus Bueno buried his shot in the bottom half of the fifth to secure the win.

Los Angeles FC 3, Sounders 0

Ryan Hollingshead and Kei Kamara scored within 11 minutes of each other in the first half to help Los Angeles FC beat hosts Seattle.

Hollingshead scored in the 14th minute and Kamara scored in the 25th minute for Los Angeles, which will face Colorado Rapids in the semifinals on Wednesday. Denis Bouanga also scored for LAFC.

Stefan Frei made four saves for the Sounders.

Rapids 0, Club America 0 (Rapids win 9-8 on penalties)

Colorado needed a penalty from goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the 10th round of a shootout to defeat America, the last Mexican team in the Leagues Cup, in Carson, California.

Club America goalkeeper Luis Malagon missed his penalty in the 10th round of the penalty shootout, giving the Rapids the win.

Steffen made four saves in regulation time, while Malagon only made one. In the end, America had 21 shots and Colorado had six. The Rapids reached the semifinals by also defeating LIGA MX teams Leon, Juarez and Toluca.
