MIAMI — A little girl is dead after drowning in a park near Hialeah on Saturday night.

The accident occurred at Amelia Earhart Park, 11900 NW 42nd Ave. Miami-Dade police told CBS News Miami that the 3-year-old girl was at the park with an adult family member when she “became separated from him,” at which point the relative called police. Officers arrived and immediately began searching for the child.

Park rangers eventually found the child in a body of water in the park, where they pulled her out and officers began rescue efforts, Miami-Dade police said. The girl was then taken by Hialeah Fire Rescue to Palmetto General Hospital, where she died.

The relative remained on site and is cooperating with the investigation, police told CBS News Miami.
