Doctors in Taiwan had to remove over 300 kidney stones from a 20-year-old woman who suffered from chronic dehydration because she drank sweetened drinks instead of water.

What happened: Earlier this month, Xiao Yu was admitted to Chi Mei Hospital in Tainan with fever and severe back pain. An ultrasound scan revealed hundreds of kidney stones in her swollen right kidney, ranging in size from 5 mm to 2 cm.

What was the cause?: Yu admitted that she had avoided water for years and instead consumed beverages such as bubble tea, fruit juice and alcohol, which had led to chronic dehydration and a buildup of minerals in her kidneys.

The treatment: Doctors performed a surgery called percutaneous nephrolithotomy, which lasted two hours. They reportedly removed about 300 stones. The woman’s condition is now stable and she has already been discharged from the hospital.

Meaning of water: Dr. Lim Chye-yang, the surgeon who performed the procedure, stressed the importance of drinking enough water to prevent kidney stones.

“Proper water intake is crucial for diluting minerals in urine,” said Lim metro“If the body does not have enough water available, minerals in the urine can easily concentrate, increasing the risk of stone formation.”

Kidney stones: According to Dr. Lim, about 9.6% of Taiwan’s population may develop kidney stones during their lifetime, with men being affected three times more often than women. The condition typically occurs in people between the ages of 50 and 60.
