The 20 biggest transfers in the world in the 2024 summer transfer window

The 20 biggest transfers in the world in the 2024 summer transfer window

There are currently more than 20 transfers worth £30 million or more, and Atletico Madrid are the most expensive of all after signing a star from Manchester City.

Players are ranked according to the amount of the initial fee, including any additional fees.

1) Julian Alvarez (Manchester City to Atletico Madrid) – £64 million plus add-ons
Man City were more than happy to sell World Cup winner Alvarez when he made it clear he was keen on a new challenge. Atletico made it possible by agreeing to pay a sum that will be hard to beat this summer. The transfer fee could total £80 million.

2) Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth to Tottenham) – £55m plus benefits
It’s a shame he didn’t make the England squad for Euro 2024, but his 19 Premier League goals were enough to earn him a move to Tottenham, with only Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal still needing to win in the Big Six.

3) Leny Yoro (Lille to Manchester United) – £52m plus benefits
Man Utd fans would have you believe that they “beat Real Madrid to the signing of Leny Yoro” as if he had no other choice. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant signing for the Red Devils, who have secured one of the best teenagers in the world. Another centre-back is still on the cards and Sir Jim Ratcliffe means business.

4) Pedro Neto (Wolves to Chelsea) – £51m plus benefits
It’s far from the craziest idea Chelsea have spent £50m on in recent years, and the 24-year-old could be a bargain if they can get him on the field regularly. However, there is one big if: due to various injuries, Neto has missed over 100 games for club and country over the past four seasons.

5) Joao Neves (Benfica to PSG) – £50m plus benefits
Just 19 years old, he is one of the most coveted players in world football, having joined for a fee that could reach £60 million if various targets are met. “Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally,” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. “He really wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain and was determined to fight for the shirt – that’s what we expect from all our players.”

6) Amadou Onana (Everton to Aston Villa) – £50 million
Aston Villa are serious about returning to the Champions League. The signing of Onana means They are the biggest spenders in the summer 2024 transfer window.

7) Moussa Diaby (Aston Villa to Al-Ittihad) – £50 million
It felt like a coup when Villa signed the Frenchman, but he started just 25 Premier League games and was often substituted by the resurgent Leon Bailey. A year later he left for Saudi Arabia, where he probably should have gone from the start.

8) Dani Olmo (Leipzig to Barcelona) – £47.2m plus add-ons
Nico Williams was Barcelona’s top target, but Olmo, who also won the European Championship with Spain, is a good alternative: he returns to the club he left a decade ago at the age of 16.

9) Michael Olise (Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich) – £45 million plus benefits
You’ll read further that it’s a £50m+ transfer, but only if it’s successful will it be. The initial transfer fee is £45m. But the truth is we fully expect it to be successful because Olise is brilliant for Crystal Palace. It’s a great transfer for everyone involved.

10) Joao Palhinha (Fulham to Bayern Munich) – £43 million plus add-ons
This is what happens when Bayern Munich don’t win the Bundesliga: They a) spend a lot of money and b) spend a lot of money on Premier League players because they just signed Vincent Kompany. Fulham more than doubled their money on Palhinha in two years, but it still seems pretty cheap for one of the best defensive midfielders in the English top flight.

11) Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa to Juventus) – £42.35m
Much to their chagrin, Champions League qualifiers Aston Villa were forced to make a big sale to comply with PSR rules and avoid potential future points deductions, with midfield pivot Luiz being chosen as the casualty. In keeping with this summer’s transfer window style, the Premier League club are getting a couple of players back from the Turin side in separate deals.

12) Desire Doue (Rennes to Paris Saint-Germain) – £42.5m plus add-ons
The 19-year-old winger is one of the brightest young talents in Ligue Un. His arrival in Paris will likely end their interest in Jadon Sancho, who cost £73 million and flopped at Manchester United, despite a discussed swap deal.

13) Endrick (Palmeiras to Real Madrid) – £40 million plus add-ons
That transfer fee could change as more details emerge, as reports suggest the original fee Real Madrid agreed to pay the Brazilian club over 18 months ago was between £30m and £50m. We’re going with the Transfermarkt version for now and the truth may never come out. What we do know is that Endrick is signing for Real Madrid as soon as he turns 18 and that Brazil bloody loves him.

14) Max Kilman (Wolves to West Ham) – £40m
West Ham is suddenly the third biggest spender in Europe this summer after signing Kilman
They will inevitably drop down a few places as the transfer window progresses, but Kilman is certainly a godsend after being linked with several elite clubs.

15) Willian Pacho (Frankfurt to PSG) – £38.6m
Centre-back Pacho, another graduate of the Independiente del Valle stable that also produced Moises Caicedo, has brought Frankfurt a small fortune after only joining from Royal Antwerp in June 2023.

16) Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich to Manchester United) – £38.4m plus add-ons
Erik ten Hag loves a former Eredivisie player and would be even more fond of him if he had coached him at Ajax. De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui are the latest to reunite with the Man Utd coach who spent over £150m this summer.

17) Ian Maatsen (from Chelsea to Aston Villa) – £37.5 million
He was instrumental in Borussia Dortmund’s run to last season’s Champions League final after joining the Bundesliga side on loan in January, although he did not cover himself in glory in the final. It is another big win for Chelsea, who have made around £170m from selling academy graduates over the past two seasons.

18) Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna to Manchester United) – £36.5 million
The first signing of a bold new era for the club is obviously a Dutchman, although Zirkzee does not bring the required Eredivisie experience of an ordinary Erik ten Hag player. Manchester United actually paid the striker more than the £33.6 million release clause, but for the sake of the PSR-friendly salary structure, this is more typical incompetence.

19) Elliot Anderson (Newcastle to Nottingham Forest) – £35m
A huge sum for a 21-year-old with 44 Premier League appearances – just 13 of them as a starter – who has yet to win a Scotland cap. But Anderson is clearly in the ‘man’s game’ category, would have played more last season had he not been sidelined for a long time with a back injury, and we now have to accept that the going rate for emerging academy talent is about double what it should be these days.

Mikel Arteta claims he has been an admirer for some time, but nothing will convince us that he has not been convinced by The Assist for Italy against Croatia at the Euro 2024, which worth 42 million pounds aloneHe joins a frightening group of defenders who are under contract at the Emirates.
