The “quick” 1p method to remove limescale from taps in seconds

Limescale, that unwelcome guest on taps, shower doors and in our kettles and coffee machines, has met its match thanks to tips from a Facebook group. Normally harmless but stubborn limescale can cause damage if ignored, especially when it encrustes taps where harsh chemicals are not an option for cleaning.

Enter Bev Franklin, who posted on Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips expressing her gratitude for a solution that saved her from having to buy new bathroom fittings. “I love this group. (I was) convinced I needed new bathroom fittings after trying everything to remove limescale,” she wrote.

She added: “I followed the lovely ladies’ advice. 30 seconds later and after spending a 1p coin, my taps were like new… very pleased.”

She’s not alone – fellow group member Kim McQuinn recommended a “two pence coin to knock the lime off. It’s amazing.” Karen Poole offered a similar tip, writing: “Just rub a wet two pence coin over the lime and it just falls off,” reports the Express.

Rebecca Jackson explained the process in detail: “Take a wet 1 or 2 pence coin and rub it in a circular motion and the limescale will simply come off.” This unconventional tactic uses a reaction between the copper in the coins and the calcium in the limescale, causing the latter to break down.

Other techniques for removing limescale from faucets include using white vinegar, Viakal and lemon juice.
