Can Klaus die? Showrunner Steve Blackman reveals everything

(Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 3 follow below.)

One of the biggest twists in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy is the revelation that Klaus’ (Robert Sheehan) powers go far beyond what he previously thought. Klaus can not only communicate with the dead – he can also Come back from the dead. And that, many times!

Through some training exercises with the more gentle Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) of this timeline, Klaus learns that his near-death experiences weren’t near-death experiences at all. He died each time and came back to life each time. Hargreeves hones Klaus’ skills by throwing him under a bus over and over again, but the question remains: Can Klaus die?

The answer, it seems, is no. “Klaus would definitely come back,” showrunner Steve Blackman said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “Klaus can’t be killed. Klaus now, unless something changes at some point, will come back to life. That’s his ability. You could blow him up and he would come back eventually.”

And while Season 3 makes it seem like Klaus has always had this ability, Blackman added that the new season will explore the idea that these powers change and shift over time.

“I always play with the idea that their powers are constantly evolving,” the showrunner said. “Just like we evolve as people, the more they have their powers, the longer they have their powers, the more they evolve, the more they can control them and they’re constantly changing. We kind of saw the long version of that with Harlan, who, obviously after 50 years with powers, was very focused and really understood his power. But I wanted to make it clear that Klaus was special, that he had all those overdoses, all those times he tripped in front of traffic, he didn’t realize it, but he wasn’t just lucky, he actually died but was reborn.”

Blackman was also excited by the idea that Klaus would discover this ability in an infiltrated father-son relationship with Hargreeves.

“He had to teach him that in a very hard way with a ball and a bus. And I just thought, a child is a child and even though Klaus is very overexcited, he wants to have a relationship with his father like everyone else.”

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy is now streaming on Netflix.
