Red Sox could sign ex-Yankees hitter to build much-needed offense

The Boston Red Sox could use a little more depth on offense in the final phase.

Boston’s offense has been on fire since the All-Star break, but it could still use a little more depth. The Red Sox are in the midst of a heated race for the American League wild card and could use all the help they can get.

A player who could help has also recently become available. If Boston wants to build some more offense, they should consider a rotation that includes former players from the Cleveland Guardians, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels and all-around player Gio Urshela of the Detroit Tigers.

According to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, he was recently designated for a trade by Detroit.

“The Tigers announced today that they have selected the contracts of infielders Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. Those moves were reported yesterday,” McDonald said. “In related moves, outfielder Akil Baddoo was sent to Triple-A Toledo and infielder Gio Urshela was designated for transfer. To free up another 40-man spot, left-hander Easton Lucas was designated for transfer. Robert Murray of FanSided reported on Urshela’s move to X ahead of the official announcement.

“Urshela, 32, reached free agency for the first time after the 2023 season. He had a solid four-year run in the major leagues from 2019-2022, but then had an injury-plagued 2023 season. He played 62 games with the Angels and hit just two home runs before a broken pelvis derailed the second half of his season.”

Urshela is a nine-year major league veteran who had his most successful career with the Yankees, hitting 21 home runs, scoring 74 runs, and posting a .314/.355/.534 batting average in 2019. He is a hitter who can hit first and, when healthy, hit double-digit home runs and a batting average that is usually around .300.

Urshela can play all over the field and would be a great help to the Red Sox.
