“Doctor Who” shows groundbreaking villain twist in new episode

Doctor Who Spoilers for the season 14 episode “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” follow. The episode is available to stream now but will not air until Saturday at 6:30pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who has broadcast the return of one of the classic series’ most famous monsters: Sutekh the Destroyer.

The latest episode, “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” confirmed a popular fan theory that the villain, who first appeared in the 1975 serial “Pyramids of Mars,” would return in this year’s finale. The self-proclaimed “God of all Gods” originally faced off against Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor and his companion Sarah Jane Smith.

The latest episode of Doctor Who, now available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Disney+, ended with the Doctor, Ruby and UNIT at the mercy of Sutekh after the monster managed to attach itself to “the fabric” of the TARDIS and travel back in time.

Sutekh the Destroyer, a member of the Osiran race and self-proclaimed god, wanted to wipe out all life on Earth in this adventure from the 1970s, but was stopped by the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, who used the power of a time tunnel.

The way Sutekh was destroyed in the Pyramids of Mars may provide insight into his return, as the Doctor and UNIT used a similar device to recreate the night of Ruby’s birth.

While they unsuccessfully attempted to identify Ruby’s mother by reconstructing surveillance footage in 3D, a dark reddish cloud appeared in UNIT’s time window device and then escaped into the physical world.

As for recurring guest star Susan Twist, viewers got a little more insight into why she appears throughout the series, no matter where in time and space the Doctor and Ruby end up.

In “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” Twist played tech billionaire Susan “Sue” Triad, whose company Triad Technologies wanted to bring free software to the world.

Both the Doctor and UNIT suspected that this mysterious woman might actually be the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan, but it turned out to be a huge trap.

The One Who Waits – a god-like being already referred to by the Toymaker and the Maestro – deliberately tricked the Doctor into believing that Sue Triad and her company Triad Technology were involved in a TARDIS.

“S Triad” is actually an anagram for “TARDIS,” but that was a red herring, as the relevant anagram was actually “Sue Tech” aka Sutekh.

When Sutekh showed up at UNIT headquarters, UNIT officer Harriet Arbringer (Genesis Lynea) was revealed to be the harbinger of the evil god (“H. Arbinger”), while Susan Triad transformed into a demonic entity during a worldwide livestream.

Sutekh described himself as the “mother and father” of all the Chaos Gods in the universe, while his harbinger warned, “He has hidden himself in the howling void.”

“He hid in the storm. He braved the storm, the darkness and the pain and he whispered to the ship. All the time he whispered and delighted and seduced and the ship obeyed.

“The Lord of Time was blind and vain and knew nothing.”

The episode ended without Doctor Who clarifying exactly what Susan Triad’s relationship is to Sutekh, or whether she is perhaps another vessel for the “God of all Gods.”

Viewers still don’t know who Ruby’s mother is – although there was another intriguing moment earlier in the episode when Ruby’s neighbor Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson) predicted that “He Who Waits” was about to reveal himself.

Since Mrs. Flood has previously shown that she is familiar with a TARDIS, we would expect more on that in next week’s season finale, “Empire of Death” – along with a mysterious guest appearance by Fleabag’s Sian Clifford as “Kind Woman.”

Doctor Who new episodes will be broadcast on Saturday at midnight on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available in the UK on BBC iPlayer.
