Burst water pipe leaves huge hole in the middle of street in Durham district
A burst water pipe left a huge hole in the middle of the street in a Durham neighborhood on Thursday.
At around 2:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a burst water pipe in the 600 block of Old Orchard Avenue.
A WRAL viewer sent us photos of the break. You can see water shooting out of the ground, likely causing the huge hole in the road.
The city said nine customers were without water Thursday morning and water pressure was low in other areas.
Workers spent hours repairing the water main. The city said water service was restored at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
While water service is being restored in the area, the city is asking affected residents to “run the cold water from their bathtubs while service is being restored and to let it run for five minutes after the water is clear.”
It is unclear whether and how much damage this break caused.
“We will assess the damage after repairs are completed,” the city said.
Old Orchard Avenue is still closed. The city said it does not know what caused the water main to break.
