Celtics strengthen their guards and sign former Brooklyn Net
A former Brooklyn Nets guard is on the way.
Even though free agency took place nearly two months ago, some underrated talents remained undiscovered. Former Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV was one of those players. However, on Wednesday he got his chance.
It has been reported that Walker has agreed to a contract with the Boston Celtics, but it is an Exhibit 10 contract. If Walker does not make it through training camp with the Celtics, the team can now give him a bonus and place him with the Maine Celtics – the team’s affiliate team in the G League.
The 25-year-old will certainly have a big impact. He is a cheap addition for the Celtics, who are heavily tied up financially in their core players. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White have all been rewarded for their play, although it hurts Boston in terms of the salary cap.
Walker is the perfect addition when it comes to guard depth. He is a low-risk, high-reward addition. Last season, he averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Walker shot 42 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the three-point line.
Having spent four seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and one with the Los Angeles Lakers, Walker has a wealth of experience at the NBA level, which, combined with his incredible athleticism and on-court skills, makes him a quality NBA player in every capacity.
The Miami product played 58 games for the Nets – without a single start – and averaged 17.4 points per game, his lowest since the 2019-20 season.
