Everything we know so far about Samara Joy’s new album “Portrait”
Co-produced by Joy and multiple Grammy Award winner Brian Lynch, the eight-track album features her touring band, which includes trumpeter Jason Charos, trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman.
Based on a report by diversitythe majority of the project will feature Joy’s writing with Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and others. In addition, the album will also feature interpretations of standards, including new arrangements such as “You Stepped Out of a Dream” (out now) and “Autumn Nocturne.”
“A source of inspiration that never runs dry because different streams flow in and constantly feed into the main source. That’s what comes to mind when I think of this project and the musicians who created it with me,” Joy said of the project, according to Variety. “Eight musicians, eight fresh perspectives and musical backgrounds – all together in a context designed for growth and exploration. Designed to use our pens and heads and create music that is inspired by many, but still uniquely our own. Because of the incredible depth of musicianship and creativity that goes into this band’s sound, I’m honored to present portraitshaped after a year of development and revision on the road.”
For the rest of the year, Joy will be on a international tourThe 39-date tour begins on August 30 at the DC Jazz Festival in DC and ends on April 30 at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Joy’s last album, Stay a whilereached number 158 on the US Billboard 200 chart and number 1 on the US Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
