Girls lacrosse added as an emerging sport

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – It’s an exciting time for girls lacrosse as the game continues to enjoy popularity and received an even bigger boost today.

The IHSAA has officially added girls lacrosse as an emerging sport for the 2025-2026 school year.

However, before it becomes official and a full-fledged sponsorship sport in Indiana, 100 schools across the state must offer a girls’ lacrosse program.

Programs are already running in seven schools in the region: Bosse, Central, Reitz, Gibson Southern, Castle, Memorial and North.

The head coaches at Memorial and North were understandably quite excited about the move.

“It’s just really exciting to finally get a chance to play in an up-and-coming sport because the girls work really hard, everyone has worked really hard for this,” said Memorial Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Tracy Martin. “To overcome that hurdle to start a new school, I think that’s the key to success.”

“It usually takes about a year to get a program up and running,” said Troy Shekell, North girls lacrosse head coach. “You have to start with the junior team first, then play there for usually two years and then get into the varsity program.”

The two trainers have already mentioned numerous interested schools, so we can hopefully expect the introduction of new programs soon.
