Is there an Eastern Federation spy on board?

The Ark Season 2, Episode 7, “It Can’t Be True,” focuses on some personal relationships. Also, everything on Ark-1 is kept secret and the secrets of the people on board are revealed.

Warning: This post contains SPOILERS from The Ark Season 2, Episode 7, “This Can’t Be True.”

Just when I was getting tired of Lati and Kimi talking privately, things came to a head in the new episode. I shouldn’t have doubted The Ark Authors. We quickly learn that Kimi and Lati are spy hunters. Their goal on Ark-15 was to hunt down the Eastern Federation spies.

There were spy hunters on Ark-1, but they were killed when the ship was attacked in the first episode of the series. This meant that the EF spies could hide, but not for long.

The Ark - Season 2

Kimi is too slow for Lati, so she decides to take matters into her own hands. The intrigue begins when someone tries to use Kelly to kill Eva. Suspicion first falls on Trust, who wanted to help Kelly control her own implants. When Eva is later poisoned, the Ark-1 crew must find out who would have the means to do so. There is a plant that could be used to make poison, but Angus says he never planted it. But who had access to the garden? Lati!

It turns out that Lati had stolen Dr. Marsh’s wrist console so she could control Kelly’s implants. When that didn’t work, she poisoned Eva. When that didn’t work either, she controlled Kelly again, this time kidnapping Alicia and threatening to kill her. Lati wanted to take a shuttle with six months’ worth of supplies. She had six months to get help from someone.

Garnet didn’t let that happen and managed to get through to Kelly. Kelly was able to control herself even though Lati activated all of her implants. It was a brave move and I love that we see Kelly being able to assert herself despite the implant control. This will definitely be important later!

Lati is arrested while Trust is finally released from his prison cell. Kelly is still in prison and doesn’t have the console that Cat 2.0 gave her. However, Garnet makes it clear that the console will stay in her cabin and be locked away. Kelly will be allowed to take control if Garnet gives permission. It’s time for Kelly to prove to everyone that she will be a member of the team. We have to remember that Kelly is really just a kid. She wasn’t allowed to grow up like others, so she still has a lot to learn. At least she seems ready to do that, and I want to believe in her redemption.

Of course, Latis and Kimi’s secrets come to light when they go rogue. Kimi has to confess to Garnet and Strickland what they were planning on Ark-1, so it was nothing personal, it was all part of a mission. This leads to Garnet turning to Eva for answers.

Is Eva an EF spy? Garnet doesn’t want to believe it. None of them believe it, but Eva admits she is one. Well, she was. That’s probably changed, due to everything that happened on Ark-1 since they all woke up early from cryo.

However, this doesn’t change anything for Garnet. She has no choice but to send Eva to her hut to be guarded, effectively putting her under house arrest.

But poor Brice! He doesn’t want to believe that Eva is an EF spy either. His reaction makes it clear that Lati and Kimi were very wrong about him, just like we all suspected. Can Brice and Eva get over this? I guess that depends on what happens to Eva now that the truth has come out.

The Ark - Season 2

Eva’s secret wasn’t the only one that came out in this episode. Kabir and Marsh have become very close. At first, Kabir backed away because Jelena showed signs of interest, but Jelena confessed to Kabir why she was in the infirmary in the first place. This opens the door for something between the two doctors, but Kabir is still hesitant.

While she’s taking out her frustration on a punching bag, Strickland comes in and talks to her. Strickland is one of those guys who keeps all his secrets, so it’s not surprising that Kabir feels like she can talk to him about her past. She’s decided to join the Ark-1 mission to get as far away from her narcissistic, abusive ex-husband as possible.

Like so many who have escaped abusive situations, she blames herself for some of the blame. She didn’t really escape him either. The trauma is still there and she is afraid she will end up in the same situation again. I adore The Ark for telling this story. There have always been hints of abuse in Kabir’s past and it is realistic and raw to see that she is hesitant to enter into a new relationship because of this past.

It’s not easy to find someone you can trust, but like I said, Strickland is one of those guys you know can keep secrets. Having the chance to see a friendship like this grow on screen is beautiful, and I love that Strickland offers to teach Kabir some self-defense techniques. Everyone should learn them, even if they never use them.

The Ark - Season 2

Since the beginning The Arkwe were all rooting for Alicia and Angus. They are so sweet and their conversation about how neither of them had sex even though they both assumed the other had sex was so sweet. I’m glad they had that. It’s another ship I’m so here for right now. It’s all about Spencer and Garnet.

The beginning of this episode picks up from the explosion at the end of the previous one. Garnet realizes that one of the second generation clones must have a device to detonate the bomb. Spencer is sure it’s Ian, and Ian is locked in a cell. I’m not sure it’s him though. There’s a moment of candid conversation between the two when Spencer learns what happened to the other two clones/brothers. These second generation clones were bred as spare parts for the rich.

This is how Spencer learns what he was actually created for. He turns to Garnet, who distracts him by showing him the board for the Juno project. Before Spencer even has a chance to look at who he was matched with, Garnet sobs because he was matched with no one. Trust didn’t want clones to reproduce. It’s painful to find out that you didn’t have a partner when everyone else did.

When Spencer realizes that he shouldn’t have been working with anyone either, Garnet points out that no one knew he was a clone and that he was working with an ensign who was killed in the first attack on the ship.

Here we get the sweetest moment of the whole episode. Spencer points out that Trust doesn’t want to set him up with anyone either since everyone now knows he’s a clone. So that means Garnet and Spencer aren’t partners. Maybe they should work together. The smile on Garnet’s face tells us everything. The two are interested in each other. I’m ready for the writers to flesh this out further.

The Ark - Season 2

There is one storyline left unfinished in this episode, and it has to do with the clones. Milos went to see Kabir, only to have a fight break out in the infirmary. When Kabir went with Strickland and others to break up the fight, Milos stole some red pills. They are up to something, but does this mean more people will be locked up, or will we see people sent to space? With five episodes left, it’s hard to say.

The Ark airs Wednesdays at 9.10 on Syfy.
