Hot and humid Wednesday in NYC, but it won’t last long, meteorologists say
New York’s hot, humid summer will not give way to September without a fight: meteorologists predict that today will bring high temperatures and high humidity – but not for long.
“It looks like a one-day heat event here,” said National Weather Service meteorologist David Wally. “We’ve got a cold front coming through this afternoon, and much cooler air will arrive later Thursday evening.”
The NWS has issued a heat advisory for the city and surrounding areas from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Highs are expected to be around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and heat index readings will rise above 100 degrees when humidity is factored in.
A heat warning has been issued for Trenton and Philadelphia, meaning temperatures will be even higher there.
While it is expected to be sunny most of the day, there is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m., which could bring some cooling.
Thursday will feel like a completely different time of year, with temperatures barely above 25 degrees Celsius, Wally said.
“After that, the weather from next weekend to early next week should be more seasonal, if not below average,” he said.
Fans of the US Open on Wednesday will definitely feel the excitement as the athletes play their second rounds. Defending champion Coco Gauff will face Germany’s Tatjana Maria at around 7 p.m. at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Cooling centers will be open across the city today. Here’s where to find one.
If you want to cool off on one of the city’s beaches, you can expect waves of about 90 to 120 centimeters and a light breeze.
This story has been updated to reflect that cooling centers will be open today.
